Payless Car Rental Reviews: What You Should Know (1)

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION - MANDATORY INSURANCE AND HIDDEN CHARGES TRIPLE CHARGES. Needless to say I was overly excited when I initially found this place that rented cars for a lot less than the bigger car rental companies. According to their website, I rented a standard SUV (Hyundai Tucson) from January 25 to February 4, 2023 (10 days) for $260.32 (base price) plus an additional $104.47 for taxes and fees. The reservation clearly stated it was $364.79 at the time of pickup.

However, nothing could be further from the truth. When I got there, Alberic, the clerk behind the counter, told me that it was mandatory to take out their mandatory insurance, which immediately increased the estimated cost from $364.79 to $930.18 ($565.39 more than what I indicated. This amount also included other taxes). Needless to say I wasn't happy at all. I explained to the salesman that I always use American Express, which counts as rental car insurance, and that I also have GEICO as my driver's insurance company, to which he just said, "If you don't get our insurance, you can't rent our cars." .

I saw other very angry customers making the same point I was trying to make, but the sales rep seemed very unfazed by the customers' claims. Due to circumstances I had to rent the car for a day which cost me $138.42 but luckily I was able to get a car from somewhere else where they weren't trying to scam money from me.

It is extremely sad that Payless Car Rental is trying so hard to use fully insured US citizen drivers. This kind of practice leaves a very sour taste in the mouths of tourists. The salesman wasn't disrespectful, but his nonchalant and carefree manner only added salt to the wound. Aside from the young people delivering and receiving cars who were very humble and respectful, the customer service representatives and their owners should be ashamed.

This is my rating ..(0). Managers must be available 24/7 to attend to customer complaints or needs. I see no logic in an operations manager assigning a "responsible" employee to take full responsibility when it is the manager who addresses the problems immediately. I have read many negative comments on Google Maps about Payless Car Rental (located at 100 Marginal Los Ángeles, Carolina, 00979, Puerto Rico) that the cars picked up at this location are damaged. I apparently caused damage to the car and then they overcharge the amount of money without having a chance to explain the problem and probably solve it immediately. Unfortunately, there is no way to solve it as there are no managers responsible for solving the problems. Bad service and huge damage to the company she represents.

I bought my rental car through a third party called Priceline. I chose to pay for rental car insurance through Priceline. I rented the car for 3 days in October and everything was totally fine. I returned the car, no problem. 3.5 months later I receive a letter in the mail that I will be billed for a dent! They charged my credit card without showing me any proof of the dent or that I was the one who made it! Anyway, I paid for the insurance so I email customer service to ask why I was charged if I have insurance. They told me that was not their problem, I needed to speak to the third party payer who was Priceline. I call priceline, they tell me to call the Allianz insurance company. After HOURS on the phone, Allianz refuses to pay for the dent as the claim was made outside of the "45 day window" of my coverage. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS FRAUDULENT COMPANY! I WILL NEVER USE THIS SERVICE AGAIN!!!

Bait & Switch organization. Rude and disrespectful. I arrived at the car rental counter at 2:00 p.m., 2 hours late. The person who greeted me informed me that my reservation was canceled because I was late and my price of $350 for a medium sized car was no longer valid. He offered us another car as long as we pay $400. I don't want to take his bait, so I immediately made a new reservation through Priceline. He said he couldn't honor my reservation on the same day even if I paid 100 times the reservation. The only way he's going to give us the car is to get his offer. I will and will never rent from this company again. 99% of customer reviews are negative. This rental location is in San Diego Car Rental and it happened on December 21, 2022.

I failed to remove the gas hose from a Payless rental car and when I drove back the hose stretched and ripped off the plastic gas cap. The cost of a plastic gas cap is $45, and the plastic housing it attaches to probably costs another $100 or so. However, 8 months after this happened, an independent insurance company filed a claim for $3,200 showing repairs to areas behind the gas cap and other areas that had no effect. The only contact with the car was the extended gas hose and the only damage was the gas cap. This is such a shameless money grab that I would never rent from this company again.

For a company that calls itself Payless, this is absolutely NOT true! They have so many hidden fees that they don't even tell you about them. My rental car was double the amount I selected when reserving my rental car in Chicago! Customer service at the counter was poor and there was no explanation for all of these charges, let alone that I signed for something that involved more than I was told I would sign. Now with customer service they have an opportunity to rectify this but only acknowledge 1/4 of my charges but tell me "thanks for the feedback" and sympathize with me. **! I will NEVER use them again, and neither should you!

I was offered a price online that doubled the price we got at the counter. I hate that they seem to bait and switch product once you drive to their location. I will never rent from this company again.

A zero rating would have been my choice. Payless San Diego Airport Rental Service is a franchise company. A more appropriate name would be "PAYMORE" or "WORTHLESS". I rented twice from this company at SAN and each time they scammed me. The first time our flight was delayed and we got to the counter over an hour after the reservation time. They said they couldn't deliver the car at the reserved price and nearly doubled the price from $200 to over $400. Last weekend I reserved a so-called "Payless Special". The last thing I do when going through the paperwork at the counter is to sign the total price, which suddenly ended up being $30 more than I reserved the vehicle for. I had a printout of the reservation with the price and reservation number but they didn't budge. You wasted two hours of my time.

The "Special" was a run down tiny vehicle with more scratches, dents than you would imagine possible and a damaged windshield. I was hesitant to hire this car but when I came back they offered me 4 similar vehicles in similar terrible condition so I decided to take the one originally assigned. The tiny damage slip was completely filled out with all damage notes. After returning it 2 days later I asked the clerk for a receipt but he said it would be emailed to me. Had to call them a few days later to get my delivery receipt. I called the Payless central office first but they said they couldn't help me as it is a franchise and not in their system. All in all again a terrible experience. For me never again. This Payless franchise needs investigation to rip off its customers.

Took me 2 1/2 hours to get my car. Nathan said he would give me a discount for my inconvenience. I received a car where the GPS was not working and the car was damaged inside and out. He said he would charge me $28.00 a day instead of the $43.00 a day to make up for the 2 1/2 hour wait. I was billed the full $43.00. I was told by Payless that this is a franchise and they couldn't help me.
